The NYPD would like you to know that there’s a new loading and unloading zone in Union Square. Just use the sidewalk! Don’t worry – you won’t be ticketed, even though you’re breaking the law and inconveniencing thousands of pedestrians. After all, if the cops do it, it must be legal!

Bit unfair, no? You don’t know why the are there. Think youre stretching a bit.
villagevegan: It’s not unfair at all. If they need space to load and unload, they should do it while parked on the street. There’s a permitting process that would allow a temporary loading/unloading zone to be set up on the street. They could have used the already-existing loading zones on Union Square West, too. Instead, they chose to use the sidewalk.
It’s bad enough that the city is taking over a massive public space for private enterprise (the Union Square Holiday Bazaar) for the next six weeks, but this is just as big a slap in the face.
Lately, they’ve been there most mornings… Keep in mind that it is right outside the subway entrance closest to the NYP operation inside the station. I assumed that was the reason.
