What’s missing from this picture? It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon in America’s 14th largest city, and there’s a beautiful waterside public space – the Canal Walk – to take advantage of. But instead, nearby residents of the newly constructed dense residential developments would prefer to stay inside. And visitors to the four museums within a block of the Canal Walk would be content to park their cars in parking garages connected to these museums and never venture outside.
Americans have no problem telling everyone else about how these beautiful public spaces make their cities so picturesque, but the only way they ever see these public spaces are through their car windows.
